So, it’s not coming home!
Last nights result would have had a massive impact on the productivity in quite a few organisations this morning. Hangovers, bad moods followed by numerous conversations about what England did or didn’t do, should have or shouldn’t have done. Time spent discussing tactics and selections, substitutes and penalty takers. Loads of moaning and despair amongst English football fans across the UK, and further afield.
I think we did well and I am proud of the England squad, Gareth Southgate and the support staff. We have built a foundation, to develop even further, that will have an impact on our success at the 2022 World Cup tournament, which I am looking forward to.
It’s far too easy to point fingers and criticise everything when we are sat in our armchairs drinking another cold beer. The pressure and tension must have been unbearable, throughout the whole tournament, not just the final. It reminds me that life is hard work, sometimes, and we all experience failure, poor results as much as we experience success and amazing results, but it’s what we want to focus on that will have the impact.
There are so many relatable lessons to take from sporting events that apply to life, across the board. (Wimbledon also had some amazing examples, for those into tennis and not football)
- Work hard, train hard, learn from mistakes and go again
- Rest and recuperate, give yourself space to process and recover
- Know when to stop, so you can live to fight another day
- Be creative and refine what doesn’t quite work
- Be prepared for feedback, even if it feels painful at the time, embrace improvements and make progressions
I know this is simple stuff but we do, sometimes, forget the basics and a quick reminder is always helpful, every day is a school day!
Onwards and upwards…..
