It’s great when the sun comes out again and the weather opens up the possibility of doing outdoor activities. At the weekend I went cycling, had the obligatory BBQ and watched an evening film in a neighbours back garden. It was really nice to be able to do that and not worry about getting cold or wet. I like to maximise the good weather, whenever possible, as I’m sure you do.

As we have now had confirmation that our family holiday to Turkey has been cancelled, I am hoping for an amazing UK Summer this year. We are already planning a short break away because we still have the dates booked in our diaries and want to do something fun. I was expecting the cancellation and contemplated re-booking but thought, to be safe and sensible, we’d do something more local.

Although we were initially disappointed we are now excited about planning something else. It could be camping, visits to places we haven’t been before or even a road trip of some sort. We haven’t made up our minds just yet but, now we have decided to stay in the UK, we are looking forward doing something.

It is easy to focus on what you can’t have, or do, and feel upset because something has been taken away, but as soon as a plan is made to have or do something different, motivation for action is increased. I have looked at a new tent (nothing wrong with the tents we have) and checked out areas to visit if they are open yet. We have discussed visiting London, the Isle of White, Brownsea Island, Scotland and Wales, all places we have always wanted to visit or explore more.

I realise that going abroad every year has probably stopped us doing more here in the UK and there is so much to see and do. Supporting the UK economy is important, now more than ever, and I’d like to contribute to that. I’m not sure my money will make a big impact but if loads of other people are experiencing the same and choosing to stay local, I am sure it will help.

What has your experience been? Are you still disappointed or have you made a plan and become motivated again?

Top tips to stay positive:

  1. Get over the disappointment, as quickly as possible
  2. Make a plan and get excited about it
  3. Appreciate what you do have
