Well, as some of you know, I am a Liverpool fan and it is impossible for me not to mention being Premiership champions with 7 games still left to play. I know Man City gave us a beating last Thursday, but it does not take away the amazing season Liverpool have had.
There are so many analogies to take from sport and align with life, personally and professionally, to help us all understand what it takes to be successful (Whatever that is for you). When I think of my life and rate how successful I am in the different roles I play, I am fairly happy. Not everything is exactly as I’d like it and there are things I’d like to improve as you’d imagine.
Something that is standing out more for me, due to the situation Covid-19 has created, is team work. In my personal life, I would say that this has improved and become an area of focus, during the lockdown. My family has connected more and my friends have been more vocal and supportive, so I feel it is stronger than it ever has been.
In business, I feel this is lacking. My business partner and I still talk on a weekly basis and are working on some elements of the business and I am working with a couple of our associates developing things for future projects. I am, however, missing the interaction with clients, delegates and the other ‘professionals’ I normally speak to. It’s gone really quiet and become an area of my life that feels empty.
I appreciate that no-one can commit to dates, for travel and face-to-face training, as we don’t know when this will be possible again, so I have to be patient and wait until the time is right. This is frustrating and I feel helpless because I can’t fix it!
This must be how the PFA and footballers felt. No games, no news, uncertainty and frustration. Liverpool having a great season, after building on last season, to become champions this year. The long term plan – almost ruined by something they couldn’t control.
I FEEL THE SAME…
So what did they do? Did they go home and stop training? Did they start eating more rubbish or tuck into the beer fridge and say “What the heck!” I am sure some did, but after a short spell a plan was developed, football clubs became more creative with training methods and communication with players and staff. They knew this would end at some point and they would then have to perform at a high level again soon. They needed to keep doing the right stuff behind the scenes to secure their success.
This is where I am. I am getting ready for the stadiums to open again and for the fans to return so I can get back on the pitch and perform, do my job. I am keeping match fit and I am ready to rejoin the game. It’s the only thing I can do and remain in control of.
I do miss the camaraderie, the banter and social aspect of my work, but that will return in the near future.
What are you doing to stay match fit? What plans are you making to finish your season off as a champion?
