After a week of meetings, calls, emails and a couple of days working from home, I feel satisfied. Not every week has the variety of last week and I do sometimes forget how great my job is, working with people and having the flexibility to plan my working week to suit me.

I had a meeting with a client looking to support their employees in dealing with the workload and demand, the business puts on them. Life is so busy for them all and the cracks are starting to show. They have, previously, not had time to attend sessions around resilience, well being and performance, which is ironic because if you want to maintain or improve performance, you need to make sure you look after, and invest, in yourself.

The great thing about this project is that the client is not just ticking a box and really wants to offer something that sticks and helps, each individual, to manage the pressure of the job. This means that the sessions we put together need to be short, impactful and offer quick wins. It will be a mixture of, and focus on, personal and professional elements. Topics such as: Managing meetings, email etiquette, rest, relaxation, diet and exercise, and maybe even mindfulness.

These sessions will allow, those that attend, to take some techniques away to use and practise at home as well as applying things at work. It will be ‘championed’ by the senior leadership team, sending the right message to other individuals, that it is ok to do things differently.

We have even discussed how to support people, post workshop, to make the changes, not just attend the workshops and do nothing with the information. Embedding the changes is where the big impact happens. Creating positive habits and changing a micro-culture within a business, is going to be so rewarding, I can’t wait to get started.

Businesses seem to be taking the time, and creating budgets, to support their people on the more personal side of life. Recognising that happier, healthier people can probably produce more over time and are willing to go the extra mile, because they feel valued.

By offering a few things like discounted gym memberships, adding information to the company intranet or setting up external demonstrations, for staff to attend, can all help with reducing the, sometimes, overwhelming feeling of increasing workloads.

The first thing to do is to recognise what would work for you. What is your ‘release’ and what bolsters your ability to cope with the stresses and strains that work can put on us?

With another example of a waste of life, Caroline Flack paid the price of not being able to cope with the constant pressure in her life. I appreciate we do not all lead our lives being scrutinised as she did, but we all feel pressure and need to be able to have strategies available for us to deal with things.

All I can say is “Be nice, look after yourself and keep a watchful eye on those around you”
