At the weekend, my laptop and iPad required a software update. After plugging them in and making sure I had saved everything, just in case, I pressed the button. I didn’t really look at what would be changing as, normally, I don’t notice any changes.

This time was different though. When I went to open a PowerPoint on my computer, I was instructed to sign into Office 365 as everything had moved to a new system. I knew it was coming, as I’d had warning messages over the past few months, so I followed the instructions and eventually opened my, new looking, PowerPoint.

Like most people, I get use to doing things a certain way, and change is sometimes, a bit nauseating, but this time I decided to embrace the ‘improvements’. I played around with the set-up, and it did everything I wanted it to do, so I was pleased.

When I looked at my iPad, I was blown away! I went to look at some recent photos and saw that they had been categorised into years and events, I know this is not new but they seem to have fine tuned this system. I watched the ‘shows’ and was impressed. I don’t know about you, but I have not been too great with storing photos. I come from an age where we used to have to go to a shop and print them off, so I, like some of you, have been involved with the amazing transformation when it comes to photos and videos, but not coped well.

I am so pleased that people think about new inventions to improve what we have, but these can, themselves, cause new problems. My whole life is stored somewhere, duplicated / triplicated across many hard drives, data sticks, external storage devices and a complete mess, caused by the growth of the digital age. Hundreds of images in no particular order being protected in multiple locations in case of a computer melt down – so confusing!

I can only imagine that the next development will enhance things even more. No resistance from me, I’ll embrace the changes and explore the opportunities ahead.

How about you? Are you constantly looking for the improvements and enjoying the creative journey or do you stick to the tried and tested?

In every organisation there are things that don’t quite work or are not really ‘fit for purpose’ but we put up with it and create ‘work arounds’ to help.

What needs inventing or changing for your organisation or even for your day-to-day life?

Go and fix it…..
