I saw this video clip of an interview with Jurgen Klopp (click here) and I have to say “It was a refreshing watch”.

I love the way he comes across, and his relaxed explanation, of how he has worked with the Liverpool team to build the success within the club. It’s not about him, it’s all about the club and the players.

You can’t help but admire an approach like that. I wonder how many people feel that way in business! Does your leader work with you and look after you and your needs?

His statement that he is the ‘reserve tank’ for the players is also a fantastic analogy that I think is worth adopting. When times are tough we often need to draw on someone else’s energy and feel comfortable doing that, because they are part of the bigger picture and also a member of the bigger team.

Jurgen does all of these things because ‘that is the way he is’. He is not putting on an act and his authenticity comes across loud and clear in everything he says and does.

Who is your favourite Leader and why? What do they do to get results?

I have had a few leaders in my life that have stuck out and I have learnt certain things from all of them. Some have been positive and others were not, but I have learnt to, either, adopt behaviours or to avoid things based on the experience I have had.

You can learn great lessons from terrible experiences, it’s all part of the journey and can shape who you are. You may not wish to have too many negative experiences to learn from –  the positive experiences are far more enjoyable and give valuable lessons in a positive way.

I wonder if anyone I know would see me as a good leader. I can’t say I have had an amazing impact on anyone (except my family) and it makes me ask what type of leader would I be if I was in Klopp’s shoes. I could certainly replicate his energy and emotional behaviour, but I’m not sure I’d do it in the same way or have the same impact. I watched the England game last week and couldn’t stop shouting at the TV and, if the players I was shouting at, could of heard me, I’m not sure it would have motivated them!

How do you control your emotions? Do you always have the impact you want when you show your passion for success?

I am, at best, work in progress…….
