At the weekend I went to watch a triathlon, that I’d normally compete in. (The Swashbuckler in Beaulieu – highly recommended) It was a nice change to ‘rock up’ later than usual and watch other athletes compete. The weather was fantastic and it brought back memories of doing this event in the blistering heat a couple of years ago. I enjoyed the feeling of being a supporter and watching people achieve amazing things, pushing through the physical pain barrier and overcoming the mental challenge to finish.
As always there were the familiar faces of the support teams and volunteers – the people who ensure this events happens in a safe, efficient way. The organisers have repeatedly delivered a fantastic event over the years and I have enjoyed everyone I have entered (After I’d finished!)
When we left, we decided to go to Christchurch where there was a town event going on. Food and drink stalls, solo musicians, bands, cooking demonstrations and magicians to entertain the crowds. Once again, another event that takes a lot of organising to make sure it all runs smoothly. I walked around taking in the sights, enjoying the atmosphere and, obviously, people watching. Everyone was having a different experience at the same event. Families, friends, people enjoying food, others enjoying the entertainment and some enjoying everything, maybe a bit too much!
The final event of the day was to watch the Liverpool game, whilst keeping an eye on Man City. It didn’t end up as I wanted but it was a fantastic experience again. I had a whole day of entertainment that didn’t cost me much to experience. We had a couple of drinks on our travels and I drove to the events, so petrol and parking were a small cost.
It’s great to do something entertaining, that was not really planned, and didn’t cost much. Often, I overlook the work of organisers and support teams, mostly volunteers, that take the time and effort to put on an event. I just turn up and enjoy the moment! The team behind the success don’t really get a mention.
I was amazed that, after Man City won the Premiership on Sunday, the announcer introduced a big ‘backroom team’ and everyone celebrated their contribution before the Manager and players came out. It was great to see and I wonder how often that doesn’t happen. The work done behind the scenes, to create a successful team performance or event, starts with the small things and builds to a finale where it all comes together.
Next year I will pick some events, I have previously completed, and offer my support. I might be able to do some admin, marshalling or organising, whatever is needed.
Time to give something back…..how about you?
