Having spoken to a few clients last week, I realised that everything is still the same – it’s forever changing! All businesses are having to be creative, search for new sales strategies or develop the next wonder product, something that differentiates them from their competitors.

It’s a tough environment and the importance of having good people in organisations is getting to be the thing that matters the most. Great employees doing great work, and creating an amazing atmosphere, can be the reason for success. The leaders in business should be the architects of this role and, putting the right people in the right jobs, can make it a great place to work.

Just look at the turn around with Manchester United. Ole Gunnar Solskjær has the same talent that José Mourinho had, but he has changed something in the club that has had an immediate impact. He cares for his players and realises that his success comes from getting the best from each of them, individually and collectively – it’s not all about him!

In a world where we need others to achieve great things, we need to understand what makes people tick. Understanding what motivates, drives and inspires them will help to create that ‘perfect’ atmosphere where people grow, develop and do amazing things.

Have you ever been in a job where one or two people make it a terrible place to work? You dread going into work and can’t wait to leave as soon as you can. How did you perform?

I remember, a friend of mine, moving to a new store, to become the assistant store manager, and, over a period of 6-18 months, it became obvious that there was an issue with her manager. There were tears, arguments and she nearly had an emotional breakdown, it affected her home life with her children and her husband.  Eventually she made the decision to leave that position and join a different store. She is now one of the most respected managers in that store and is the ‘go to person’ if anyone has questions, and, she loves her job. Funnily enough, she always had the potential to be that good!

Do you know anyone that isn’t producing their best (yet)? What can you do to get the best from them and release their full potential? If you are not at your best, what can you do to change it, or,  do you need to move to a new challenge?
