The football season has started! This is fantastic news for me as I love to watch certain games and enjoy the banter when watching matches with mates. It can take over some evenings and the weekends so, as with anything, it has to be planned and negotiated with family members.

My wife usually works on Saturday so it fits in nicely for us – as long as her evening plans are not interrupted. Last Saturday I even manage to get a few things done at once, I did a turbo ride in the front room while watching the early kick off. I then went off to watch my Son play football and got home in time for the late kick off on TV – perfect.

Life can be so busy and, if we are not careful, it gets full to the point it becomes stressful to have fun and fit it all in.

As with most things in life, there has to be some give and take, but why not fill your days with the things you want to do? The other day I took time out of my ‘working day’ to watch some of the European Championships and really enjoyed the peace and quiet, while everyone else was out of the house.

I suppose, the thing here, is it’s not about sport, watching TV or ‘doing things’. It’s about time management and organisation (with some spontaneity thrown in for good measure). How do we fit everything in that we want, and need to?

Here are my top tips to fit everything in:

  • Plan in advance – make a list
  • Prioritise the list in terms of Urgent vs. Important
  • Identify the need to do vs. the want to do
  • Communicate the plan to all of the people that will be affected by these plans
  • Check their (and your) understanding
  • Be prepared to adapt and flex

Enjoy whatever you enjoy doing, maximise your time and fill it with the things that make life worth living. I understand that it might not be football and it might be forest walking, visiting family or sitting reading a book – just take time, to enjoy your time.
