The bubble was well and truly burst and Croatia took the wind out of our sails. It’s not coming home – this year! I still feel that coming fourth is a great achievement and has moved English football, and the way managers think, from around the world, into a different era on the way to lead high performing teams.

The way to get the best from a team is complicated, as we know, and it takes great leadership qualities to get it right. This article, from the Guardian, makes for good reading: click here for article  (Thank you Martyn)

Last week I mentioned that creating a great environment will impact the performance of a team or with individuals and I am sure we have all experienced that affect. It might be at work or could even be at home. If the feeling is negative, the output is, invariably, negative, or at least, not at it’s best / non-productive.

With a fast moving world, when do we get time to do the ‘people thing’? Everyone seems so busy chasing targets, hitting numbers, completing projects and there is little time to reflect and celebrate success. We move on to the next thing and the cycle starts again…

So my challenge, for you all this week, is to take time to have a great conversation with the people around you. Be interested in them and their lives and explore how things are for them. What’s great about life? What are the blockers? What personal things do they want to achieve and what legacy are they creating, right now? Is it the legacy they want to leave, or is it different?

Maybe, just maybe, ask yourself the same questions!

Most of us are creating our environment ourselves. I know for a fact last week I had a couple of challenges that changed my, normally positive mood, into a grumpy old man. I was a different person, for a short time, and I realised that, if I stayed that way I would eventually create an environment that would be bad for us all and would probably perpetuate.

I went for a bike ride, gave myself space to think and came back in a better frame of mind. I just needed some time out.

Sometimes we just need space and time to think, and, in this busy world, it is vital to factor time in for this.

When did you last take time to reflect and contemplate things – without distraction?
