I was sitting in front of the computer, last Friday morning, when my Daughter walked in the room and said “Let me know when you want to go” which is when I realised I’d said I’d go running with her! I immediately searched for excuses, in my head, and thought about the classic “I have too much to do” excuse. When she mentioned that her friend wanted to join us I thought “That’s perfect, they won’t want me to go with them” so I asked if they wanted to go together but they still wanted me to go.

I got changed and we drove to the beach to do the pier to pier run. It was a beautiful day, slightly too hot, and the beach was vibrant. There were other runners, families enjoying the sun and sea and it was so nice to run along the sea front.

I enjoyed it that much, that, when I got home, we all got our beach towels and went back to spend a couple of hours relaxing and taking ‘time out’. I got my first non-wetsuit sea swim in followed by a double scoop ice cream!

We managed to squeeze in everything we needed to, whilst also getting some time to chill out and enjoy life. The day could have been so different if I’d had made the excuse, I was originally looking for, and I would have missed the experience and memory.

How often do we say we are ‘too busy’ to do certain things? It could be a walk in the park, a BBQ with friends or an evening out. I noticed that I am getting lazy when it comes to putting effort in to get out of the house and do something. I watch my children as they develop their social lives and they jump up, at a moments notice, to meet friends, go to a local bar, get out of the house and do anything rather than stay in – it’s not too much effort for them.

For the month of July, I am going to get involved more, do more things, not related to sport or work, I will put time into getting out and I’ll be a bit more spontaneous. There is so much going on, in the local area, that I don’t even know about.

I will still work and do my sports and, of course, plan in watching the World Cup games, but I am going to see what’s going on around here and be a bit more involved.

What’s going on, locally, that you don’t know about and might be fun to do?
