So after a few weeks and a string of football injuries, ranging from broken fingers, a ‘popped’ AC joint through to stitches in my head, I decided to review my football activities. Should I carry on playing, putting things down to bad luck or should I bow out due to becoming too old? Maybe my reactions were getting slow and I should dust the golf clubs off or look at investing in fishing equipment again!

As you can imagine, I decided to carry on and so was back on the pitch last week, competing in the 6-a-side league again, hoping that it was all down to bad luck. What I noticed, due to the diversity of the people playing, was that evolution was there for all to see. The youngsters giving anyone over 25 a hard time about being old and the 35+ giving anyone under 25 a hard time to “man up or go to bed”

It was great to listen to and it made me remember when I was young and how I spoke to the, older, opposition that I played against. Things have turned full circle and now it’s my turn to get ridiculed and taunted by these fast, skilful and annoying kids!

Everywhere you look there are examples of people doing things for the first time, where others are getting bored of doing things for the hundredth time! My Son recently passed his driving test so, guess what, he is driving everyone around and enjoying the freedom and responsibility – I can only imagine that will become boring and taken for granted soon.

During the sunny weather I decided to take my Mum to the New Forest for an ice-cream. We sat on a fallen tree enjoying the ice-cream, the sun and the views. After a few minutes my Mum said “I didn’t realise how many shades of green there are” so I started to look around at the trees and surrounding fields, paying more attention, and she was right, there are so many! I hadn’t noticed and I had been looking at the same view – but on a superficial level, I wasn’t enjoying the real detail like my Mum was. I was missing so much!

I noticed the ‘evolution’ at football because I took time to enjoy and experience things in the moment, but I don’t think I do it often enough and, as many of you will appreciate, normally something else distracts you and takes your attention, because we are so busy!

I could do with being a bit mindful and experience the moment – how about you?

Are you missing anything taking a superficial view?
