Is there such a thing as coincidence or does everything happen for a reason? It is easy to say “How strange was that” and then move on before really giving things another thought.
I have probably missed quite a few opportunities because I haven’t explored the reason something happened.
They (whoever they are!) say there are only 6 degrees of separation between us all and that we can connect easily if we are looking for opportunities.
LinkedIn, Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram and even FaceBook all have a way of connecting us with people we don’t really know and it is a fantastic way to communicate and get introductions. I have offered support, guidance, advice and help to people just because they know someone I know. I have extended a warm welcome to strangers, had a brief conversation and then observed from afar!
There are a few connections that keep returning and I think it’s helpful to recognise why – why are we actually communicating?
I bumped into an ex-RAF mate of mine on FaceBook a few of years ago and it would have been easy to just say hi and then let things drift, but we didn’t. A few months later a text from a previous client of mine, from 20 years ago, text me and we connected again. We now, all do business together, meet up with our families and have built stronger relationships. We have helped each other with business ventures, personal challenges and been there for each other to support when needed.
It’s not just about business opportunities, it’s about adding value to your own life and the lives of others. My life is better with these people around me and I trust it is the same for them.
It would have been so easy to say “That was great to catch up, right let’s get back to my life!”
My observation with how social media is typically used is, “When I need something I reach out”
It all seems to be about “How can you help me” and, maybe it should be “How can I help you?”
Zig Ziglar, an inspirational speaker, says: “You can get everything in life you want if you will just help enough other people get what they want.”

I agree with this approach and have seen it in action over the years with certain people I have met. I also think there has to be a balance and sometimes an internal focus is required to achieve great things. I mean, I can advise and support loads of people when it comes to being fit and healthy but if I don’t take action myself I won’t be fit and healthy!
When you are browsing your social media this week, look for some people who could really use your help or support – it might not earn you anything but it could make a massive difference to them and their lives.
