MM221

After a fantastic break away in Croatia, I feel refreshed and ready to go again. The holiday itself had some challenges with trying to keep everyone happy, engaged and, sometimes, given space to do nothing.

We did boat trips, kayaking, beach days, visits to the local town, inflatables and, of course, plenty of eating and drinking!

We talked more than usual, reconnected and bonded together again. This year was a special time because it is probably the last time we will all go away together. The children are no longer children.

University is calling and new, personal journeys are beginning, whilst others have run their course. Although that can be sad, it is also a happy time to watch the transition to adulthood – and all that brings. Parental support, in one way diminishes and in another way grows, it’s different but still required.

Late night calls, tears and frustration but also joy, laughter and excitement as the future unfolds. All of this and ‘business as usual’ at home. Other children to guide and advise, getting them ready to make the jump and follow their dreams.

Wow, it is a tough job, being a parent! It is an emotional rollercoaster ride, draining, and full on, but also so, so rewarding. If someone had told me how much it costs emotionally, and in hard cash, to have a child (We have 4) I don’t think we would have thought we would be able to cope.

It is amazing how you ‘just do’ though. People are so resilient, they get through tough times and seem to forget they ever happened. We have the ability to focus on the good times and I think that is a great coping mechanism. You know that ‘tough’ is not how it is always going to be and there is good around the corner, which makes the tough time worth while.

Working hard, putting in effort, blood, sweat and tears makes success feel so much sweeter. When things come too easy, there is no appreciation and there is almost an expectance ‘to have’ with no need to try.

I hope that we have been good parents and done the best we could. We are not perfect and still make mistakes, but that’s where the learning takes place!

So, what is the message here?

Life is a rollercoaster ride. You will have ups and downs. Set your sights, work hard, be strong and take time to enjoy the journey.

It’s not a rehearsal……….
