Saturday was a complete write off! I went out with a group of people for a (motor) bike ride at 09:30 and didn’t return home until 5:15pm. It wasn’t quite like ‘Wild Hogs’ but it was fantastic. (Click here for full film!)
I didn’t get any of my planned ‘jobs’ done at home though.
We all met in Shaftsbury, agreed the route for the day and off we went. We visited 4 locations of specific interest, stopped for lunch, tea and biscuits, took some photos and then rode home.
When I got home my ‘jobs’ were still waiting for me!
I didn’t get to go to the gym, meet my mate for a coffee and catch up, or start clearing the garden, but I had a great day out. Nothing was so important that I had to worry about a time frame. I could get to the gym anytime, will meet my mate this week, and, I actually started the garden plans on Sunday.
I nearly said no to the bike ride as I had stuff to do. I am so glad I made the effort to go and decided to put the other things off. I saw parts of Dorset I have never seen before, I met loads of new people (who have now invited me out again next week for another ride) – it’s opened up a new world for me.
It is something that I will need to manage though. There is just not enough time to do everything I want to do. From triathlons, bike rides, family commitments, friends and work, it can be a struggle to fit everything in, but I’m going to do my best!
At a client meeting last week, the client sat opposite me was responsible for getting a significant wage rise, for the staff in the business, years ago. The staff turnover in the business, over years, has meant that no-one, around now, even knows that he did that. He was quite upset by that, but, as we discussed our project, I told him that the programme we were developing would be the same. In 5 years time everything would be established based on what we were designing but no-one would know where it came from, who was involved and it would just become ‘what we do here’. That’s life!
So it’s even more important to have fun, include and be around others, have more fun and maximise your time doing things you want to do.
The jobs can sometimes wait, they don’t go away, but the fun and experience can be missed if you don’t give yourself permission to be selfish now and then.
