Being classed as a leader in business comes with many challenges and, if I were to look at the 7 qualities on the picture, this would take constant focus to be brilliant at them all.

If you were to measure yourself against each quality, how would you score? Some will be stronger than others, I am sure, and I doubt if there are many 10/10’s because we can always be even better.

Diagrams like these are designed to make us reflect and raise our awareness of the need to be developing ourselves, constantly.

How else do we stay on top of things? The old school management and leadership books would probably make funny reading in today’s business environment.

Command and Control, manage through fear and leave your problems at the door are hopefully, things of the past (unless you work for Sports Direct!) and HR would have your guts for garters if you tried to use these strategies. I wonder what we will be saying in 10 years time though, will we be laughing at the techniques we use today?

I think that the obvious is still relevant and will always have a positive impact on productivity and performance. If you treat your staff well, recognise effort, say thank you and create a happy, healthy, working environment, it will always, always, get you better results.

How is your environment, how happy are you and do you feel valued?

I remember having jobs that didn’t give me any joy except on pay day (even then that was minimal and short lived) but I knew it was just a short term thing and when I found something better, I left.

Sometimes it was great to have a manual job where I didn’t have to think and other times I needed to challenge my brain more, but in every job, the big influencing factor was who was the boss on shift.

If I had a great boss then I could deal with a lot more and I was definitely more productive and resilient – even when I washed plates, peeled potatoes and mopped floors for a job! When I had a bad boss, those jobs just didn’t get completed at the same speed or standard. I might even of gone out of my way to do a bad job….

I often come across stories of terrible bosses creating havoc and mayhem with staff but, sometimes when I dig deeper, the staff member is not always a role model either! It’s almost a question of who created who? Did I create my bad bosses?

Where relationships fray and become non-productive, we need to take a step back, look in the mirror and check in with others for some feedback. Is it me, the other person or a combination of both?

When you look at your environment, which includes all relationships internally and externally, work colleagues, customers, clients and family at home, ask yourself this question:

“Am I being a true leader or role model at this precise moment in time?”

Sometimes people switch it on and off, without even knowing! “Today (Matthew) I am going to be Alan Sugar” BUT “Tomorrow, I might be the Artful Dodger”

Consistency and development is so important, how are you at them both?
