It is disappointing when a contract falls through or a sale doesn’t complete so how do we deal with a negative result or rejection?

Sometimes I hide away and avoid people to give myself space. Other times I get mad, shout a bit, storm off and hit the gym or go for a run.

Then there are times I feel like crying……frustrated, angry and have no energy left to fight

Which ever way I choose to react will depend on many things, such as, how much time I have invested, how big a deal it could have been and the impact it was going to have. I am sure you all have things that ‘push your button’ more than others.

What I have learnt over the many years in business, is that there is no point in dwelling on a negative result. We do have to ask the questions about the reasons and if we could be better next time, but that is about it, then we have to move into a new space to create a positive result elsewhere.

Last week I spoke to a contact who was looking for some training and development for his company and, after about 10 minutes, having a great chat, I realised that the project he was looking to implement was bigger than we could handle. We don’t have the global reach required for this project and there was no way I was going to pretend we did, what’s the point? The frustration, of talking to the decision maker and then realising it was too big for us, could have ruined my day, but, I asked for a recommendation within the organisation, based in the UK, which he was happy to provide and is now  the focus of my attention, and a great result.

A few years ago I saw a great speaker W Mitchell, who had had a difficult life and had been extremely unlucky. I was inspired by his talk and remember it to this day, I reflect on his message when I am feeling sorry for myself or feeling upset that something has not gone the way I wanted it to. It makes me shake myself and get back in a positive mood.

His strap line is “It’s not what happens to you, it’s what you do about it that counts”

A 15 minute video of his story is available here

Every now and then I need inspiration, motivation and some determination from other sources. I use TED talks, YouTube and read books to re-energise me. Sometimes I call certain people who I know will listen, for a while, and then kick me up the backside and tell me to get over it.

This is something I have to work at and is not a ‘gift’ that is with me every day. How is it for you?

What do you use to ‘pump you up’ when your energy is getting low?

When I deliver training for clients I always give 100% – no excuses. I ‘park’ anything that could impact my performance and get on with the job in hand. It’s unacceptable to have a ‘downer’ in front of the people that pay for my service.

Those of you that have seen the FISH video will recognise that mindset!

Have an amazing week, use your external support and keep positive
