Getting certain task started can be a struggle at times. I don’t know about you, but I have been meaning to clear out my loft for some time now and it is something that always get replaced by something more inviting.

Does that sound familiar and does the picture on the left look familiar?

Why should I bother, it’s not as if anyone goes up there, except to put more stuff in the diminishing space?

I have loads of stuff that could probably be put into 1 of 5 boxes:

  1. Useful to keep
  2. Useful for other family members
  3. Useful for someone else – so put on Ebay or Gumtree
  4. Useful for a charity
  5. Useful to take to the dump

I think most of you would agree that would clear 80% of the stuff in the loft, so why haven’t I done it? Understanding why this would be good to complete is where the problem is. Logically, I know, I should just get on with it, but I haven’t.

So, this is what I did, and it is slightly morose. I thought that, when I die, what will it be like for my children to have to go through all of that stuff. How hard will it be for them to clear out old memories and useless artefacts from years gone by? I don’t want to put them through that and now I have a real reason to get the task done.

This thought process also links to other things that I know I should do, such as sorting the filing system out, throwing old documents away and filing important information into easy, accessible, places. I need to clear out my wardrobe and get rid of things I haven’t worn, don’t fit or have become obsolete / need replacing. I need to go through the shed outside and get rid of half pots of paint, hardened glue tubes and rusty old nails, screws and bolts.

What is your photograph storage looking like? I don’t have a system and my photos are everywhere, duplicated on different devices and in no particular order!

I am sure there are many other things that need doing, the list is growing!

Those of you that have these things already sorted, I take my hat off to you but my world has become cluttered and messy (in certain places) and I need to, systematically, get on with these jobs.

Now I have a real reason….I want to make it effortless for my children to get on with life, when I die!

What have you been putting off that needs to be done?

If you have a big enough reason nothing will stop you!
