With the internet, and everything it brings, we are only a second away from inspiration, motivation, education and information. You choose what you want, type it into your search engine and voila!

Clearly there is a mixture of good, bad and ugly material but, whatever you want, you can find.

I like to find things that send out great messages and are helpful to others so I can share it. Hopefully, it has a positive impact with someone I might not even know or have ever met.

How fantastic is that?

Because I like these things, I often get recommendations from other people, which is amazing. I recently spoke to a friend who mentioned a talk that Steve Jobs did at Stanford University and he sent me the link.

I found the talk interesting, informative and inspirational. This was pleasing as I’d heard some ‘not so good’ things about Mr Jobs more recently.

I like the analogy of the dots joining up when you look back, but I disagree, with Steve, that you can’t join the dots going forward. I think you can plan them in, and, it is a great starting point. We talk about goal setting and deliver multiple programmes where this is a focal point. Setting a plan, to get to where you want to go, is planning future dots.

However, forward planning rarely follows the exact blueprint, there are times to be flexible, adapt to the changing world and make different choices to lead to a new future.

Looking back on my life I can see why I am where I am. I can join the dots and make sense of my present situation and I am happy with life.  Having said that, if I had planned things and set proper goals 35 years ago I would probably be more successful than I am today. I would have studied harder (instead of playing so much football) and I would have chosen different topics to specialise in, things that would be useful to me now.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing!

Going forward is something I can control and if I want to achieve different things then I just need to plan and change course to reflect the new direction.

Most people don’t set compelling goals, they don’t write them down or create a plan to achieve major things and then wonder why they are, where they are!

How are you at setting goals and designing your future? Where will you be in 2-years time and where do you want to be? Are they different?

Why not try to join the dots going forward, it’s worth a try….
