At the start of a leadership development programme we often get a leader in the business to come along and share something profound with the delegates to set the scene.
Sometimes the talk is general with no real impact and groups are left asking themselves “What was that all about?”
The session delivered last week actually had my attention from start to finish and I was engaged with the stories that were told.
The speaker was measured, calm, in control and so passionate about sharing his story. The 40 minute session evolved around his 10 top ‘old man’ tips which I am going to share as the basis for this weeks MM. They are:
- It’s never too late to be the person you want to be. (Be the best version of you)
- Find out who you are and do it on purpose. (Self aware)
- I faced it all. I stood tall and did it my way. (Be yourself)
- There is no work life balance – it’s all life. (Be present)
- Doubt is our greatest barrier. (Remove your barriers)
- No-one can make you feel inferior, without consent. (Be confident)
- Everyone has a plan, until they are punched in the face. (Set goals)
- Everyone is important. (Be a real person)
- People will forget what you did but not how you made them feel. (All you really have is soft skills)
- Do what you can, with what you have, where you are. (Be resourceful)
He ended his, very well thought out, prepared talk with a final message which was “There are two types of people, those that finish what they start and those that……
Be a finisher!
These top tips, even on their own, make complete sense. With the stories he told, they came alive and all had a purpose. You could see why this guy is going to be the next CEO. He delivered something that really hit home and something we re-visited throughout the 2-day module, because the messages were relatable.
He didn’t just rock up unprepared and ‘wing’ his way through the session. He cared about making an impact and used his (valuable) time wisely.
I am sure the delegates are still talking about his session back at work and, as you can tell, I was impressed by his attitude towards something that he could have probably just muddled through.
That’s the sign of a true leader…..
Who has impressed you recently and why?
Which of the top tips resonate with you?
Have a fantastic week, being great!
