Finally, last Friday, I managed to dust off my boots and get back on the playing field again. I was asked a while ago if I wanted to play a charity game, for Ringwood veterans, and I had agreed. As the game got closer I started to wonder if I’d made the right decision and my brain kept running through the “what if” scenarios and I felt like dropping out by making some lame excuse.
I am so glad I didn’t, it was fantastic to see the lads again, have a bit of banter and play some football. The opposition were a ‘seasoned’ team with some players that had played at a decent level – in their day. We ended up winning 4-2 but it was a close game and our keeper definitely saved us a few times so deserved a few pints after the game.
We are now looking to arrange another game and, this time, I won’t even contemplate missing out. It has reminded me that, as I get older, it’s important to still get involved and not to use age as an excuse for some things. I’m not ready to sit on the sofa with my pipe and slippers, just yet, but it is easy to get into the pattern of, slowly, becoming less active and involved.
So, it’s time to sit down and plan a few things. The CV-19 has clouded my mind a bit and it has forced me to put a hold on so many things I had planned. It’s got me out of a good habit of goal setting and my list of things to achieve hasn’t been reviewed, properly, for 18 months. This week, I am going to sit down with a blank sheet of paper and go for it. I will look at the different areas of my life to make sure I balance the focus, then I will prioritise things, put dates and time lines against actions and work out my first steps.
It’s funny, when you plan to do things, they normally happen. I might not achieve everything 100%, in the time frame, but I will certainly get closer than if I don’t set a target in the first place.
Have you reviewed your goals recently? What one thing do you really want to achieve over the next 2 – 6 months. Don’t wait for Christmas, to get going, or wait until the New Year to set some meaningless resolutions. Start this week, even if it is one thing that you’ve always wanted to do, but haven’t quite done yet, get started now.
What could you achieve in the next 96 days that would make a big difference to your life?
Once I have completed my wish list I will pick a few specific things and share them with you next week. It would be great to hear some of yours, so please feel free to let me know what you have planned. Remember, once you share your plans with others, it’s out there in the public domain and that can have an affect of increasing motivation to do something!
